Foxtail Season Returns With a Vengeance
Foxtails are public enemy number one in the veterinary world. Foxtails, or grass awns, lodge in the skin, ears, eyes, mouths, noses, private parts of unfortunate pets. Once in place, they wreak enormous havoc. They can migrate throughout the body, causing infection and inflammation everywhere they tread. And they can end up in sensitive places such as the heart or the lungs, where they can cause death.

How To Proactively Protect Your Pet’s Heart Health
By East Dallas Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Karen Becker
Heart disease in dogs is too often a silent killer. By the time your dog shows the classic signs of heart disease like lethargy, wheezing, croupy coughing (a liquid-sounding cough, as though there’s fluid in the lungs) or exercise intolerance, it’s very often too late to save your beloved pet.

Help Stop Puppy Mills
Missouri has more puppy mills than any other state—and it’s very likely that a puppy from a Missouri mill is lying in a cage at a pet store near you, at this very moment. Proposition B will help these dogs by reforming Missouri’s puppy mills, but the measure won’t pass without your help.
Help us send a powerful message to Missouri voters by making a special gift to raise the $200,000 we need to air this TV ad about Proposition B.

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia – A Serious Disease All Dog Owners Should Be Aware Of
By Cindy Andrew
It was Labor Day weekend 2009 when my husband and I commented on the fact that our 8-year-old buff Cocker Spaniel, Sophie, seemed to be acting particularly lazy. She had also vomited and wasn’t eating. These things aren’t terribly uncommon for her, but what concerned me was that the vomit was green instead of its usual yellow. When we had friends over and she barely got out of bed, we knew something was wrong.

Please Help Spread The Word By Posting This Flyer
DFWCSR is having great success thanks to wonderful volunteers and fosters donating time and funds to this worthwhile effort!
We currently have 65 adoptable dogs in foster care all over the Metroplex and are inundated every day with requests to help more in kill shelters or in other unfortunate circumstances.
Your help is desperately needed to get the plea out for more fosters by networking with your friends, neighbors and business associates. Please help us by printing this FLYER and posting it in an office lunchroom, above the water cooler, on a church bulletin board, at a pet specialty boutique, groomer's, or at your veterinarian's office.
It doesn't take much to make your efforts pay off with rescue!

8 Tips For Keeping Your Dogs Calm On July 4th
July 4th is around the corner, along with the fireworks that inevitably come with this holiday. Almost all humans with canines in the United States declare this day the worst day of the year for their dogs. Veterinarians say that July 3rd is usually the most trafficked day in their offices, with clients coming in to get drugs for their dogs. Last year, I found a lost dog on the 4th of July. He was obviously a well fed, well groomed, and well behaved dog that escaped his yard when he heard the fireworks. When I called our local Humane Society, I was informed that it is the busiest time of the year for them, as more dogs are found wandering loose on July 4th than any other day of the year in the U.S.

Caring For A Blind Dog
By CarolAnn Jarnagin
Humans frequently look upon blind dogs with pity and sorrow, but a blind dog really doesn’t understand why. Your average blind dog is a perfectly well adjusted canine with few problems relating to the perceived disability it carries. Blind dogs play, cuddle, run, eat and love their people just like every other dog does.

Misty's Story: Blog postings reprinted with permission from www.readlarrypowell.com
...It’s really tough to look at this photograph and realize that this dog is a Cocker Spaniel. Mange has attacked her. Mange – so easily cured and, yet, such a threat.
This dog is Misty. We heard about her yesterday from Pam McKelroy of DFW Cocker Spaniel Rescue.
Initially, things looked bleak for Misty. She and her six puppies – just two weeks old – had been turned over to a kill shelter. Pam’s note explains, “The man that turned them in bred her with his Australian Shepherd. We had one of our seasoned volunteers go check them out and she says the mom is only around 18 pounds, appears young and is very sweet. The babies are, of course, precious.”
Sweet just doesn’t matter sometimes and in a crowded city-run animal shelter. There is not much opportunity to take a chance on saving a dog and puppies.

Winston's Story: Back To His Old Self Thanks To A Caring Chiropractor
Winston's motto: Why get out of the chair and walk to the back door when I can launch myself across the chair, across the end table and land right in front of the door? Flying is fun!
Winston was only 3 years old. One day in August of 2007, I noticed Winston sitting by the front door. Not a normal place for him to park himself. I thought it odd that he wasn't on his usual spot on the couch. As the day progressed, I noticed he was shaking. Now, Winston is scared of everything, and shakes when he's scared, but there was nothing around to frighten him, he was just sitting in front of the door, shaking. I kept thinking "how bizarre". That evening my husband came home and I pointed out Winston's odd behavior. My husband later commented that Winston wasn't jumping up on the furniture at all. The next morning, Winston wouldn't eat. My husband reached down to pick him up and he yelped. At this point, we knew there was something seriously wrong.

What To Do If Your Pet Has Ingested Something Harmful
By Dr. Andrew Jones
If your pet is showing signs of ingesting a poison, it is important that your veterinarian examines him/her. Some toxins can progress and lead to severe seizures. If you suspect antifreeze poisoning, it must be treated within 4-6 hours, before irreversible kidney damage occurs.
